Sawasabi™ Wasabi
Unique Glucosinolate Profile used for centuries to support internal health.
Wasabia japonica, one of the rarest herbs on earth, was discovered to be the perfect companion for fish centuries ago in Japan. In those long ago days fish had to be carted from the sea to internal villages in the mountains of Japan. Wasabi was discovered to be perfect companion for aging fish because of it’s natural anti microbial and anti fungal properties. While this activity is well documented through history the unique glucosinolate profile of Wasabi is also important for its potent anti inflammatory and detoxification capabilities.
Wasabi is rare so very few people have actually eaten true Wasabi. What Americans call Wasabi in the United States is actually American Horseradish dressed up with green food coloring to imitate the soft green color of the real Wasabi plants rhizome.
Wasabia japonica is a member of the Brassica family (including broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, horseradish and watercress) The Brassica family has been well researched (hot link to research) for its Chemoprotective and detoxification properties. Wasabi is unique from others in the Brassica Family because of the unique glucosinolate profile that includes long chain methyl isohiocyanates (ITC’s). The ITC’s from Wasabi have been shown to increase Phase II detoxification enzyme activity more significantly then others in the Brassica Family. These unique ITC’s have been studied for their Anti Microbial, Anti Inflammatory, Detoxification, and Chemoprotective properties (hot link to specific studies). Researchers are excited about these relatively new findings and new research is on going.
SAWA, the manufacturer of SaWasabi, is able to bring this rare Asian herb to the Dietary Supplement Industry because of their agricultural growing expertise. A semi-aquatic plant, it is indigenous to the cool mountain stream areas of the northern islands of Japan. SAWA has been able to replicate these difficult growing conditions through hydroponic growing conditions. SaWasabi is harvested at the peak of maturity and is grown under strict organic environmental controls in the worlds largest and most sophisticated Wasabi growing facilities. During the processing of the fresh Wasabi herb the plant is flash frozen and freeze dried preserving the plants natural myrosinase activity. SaWasabi is pure rhizome powder – no stem, leaf, excipients or preservatives to dilute the glucosinolate activity and supreme quality of SaWasabi.
